An impossible task

Managing and controlling Belgium's problematic contradictions, anchored by a democratic deficit and symbolised by absurd structures and unsustainable finances, undoubtedly constitute an impossible task. This applies equally to exceptional challenges, such as ageing and climate change. Within the current Belgian constellation, we see no appropriate approach possible that can solve these problems. In our view, the solution lies in making the regions more responsible. Each region should take up its own responsibility while maintaining its own preferences and without interference from the other region. The cost of its own choices cannot then be attributed or allocated to the other region. The key words are: democratisation, responsibility and self-discipline.
